Benfica is renowned for nurturing and scouting talent. Thanks to this, it can make good money on the transfer market. The next big sale could take place in the summer. The Uruguayan striker Darwin Núñez is interested in a transfer to a European club.
Núñez was bought by Benfica in 2020 from Spanish Almeria for 24 million euros as an interesting prospect. And the purchase paid off. At 22 years old, the Uruguayan is already one of the hot commodities in demand.
Transfermarkt estimates his value at €40 million, which is already higher than the amount for which the Portuguese outfit acquired him. Last season he was still looking for a goal scorer, but in the current one he has found himself.
In 36 competitive matches this season, Núñez has scored 31 goals and added 3 assists. He has scored 5 goals in the Champions League and has also scored against teams like Barcelona, Bayern, Ajax and Liverpool.
No wonder Benfica want to cash in on him. Manchester United and Arsenal are said to be interested in him. However, those interested must expect to have to offer an astronomical sum.
Benfica coach Nelson Verissimo hopes to sell his star for at least the same amount that Joao Felix left for Atlético Madrid in 2019. It was a sum of 127 million euros.
If no one meets the financial demands, it could be that Núñez will continue to stay in Lisbon. After all, there is no reason to hurry with his sale, he is under contract at the club until 2025.
