Current Ajax coach Erik ten Hag is currently the front-runner to become the new Manchester United coach. However, Dutch national team coach Louis van Gaal, who has worked in Manchester before, does not recommend him for this engagement.
“Erik ten Hag is a great coach, and that is only good for Manchester United, but Manchester United is a commercial club, so it is a big challenge for a coach. He’d bettergo to a football club,” van Gaal said at his press conference ahead of the friendly against Germany.
Manchester United is looking for a replacement for interim coach Ralf Rangnick for the new season. He plans to interview a number of coaches. Erik ten Hag is said to have attended such an interview last week.
Mauricio Pochettino (PSG), Luis Enrique (Spanish national team) and Julen Lopetegui (Sevilla) have also been linked with the head coach position at the Manchester club.
“I don’t want to give him advice, he’d rather call me himself. But he has to choose a football club and not a commercial club,” added the Dutch national team coach.
Louis van Gaal himself has already been through coaching the Red Devils. His engagement cannot be evaluated positively, but it must be said that he had a very difficult task. The whole of Manchester United was still recovering from the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.
In the end, van Gaal managed to win at least the FA Cup for Manchester United. For example, the Champions League win with Ajax is worth mentioning.
