A return to Brazil? Unlikely, Neymar is tempted by other competition before ending his career
Neymar has been at PSG since August 2017, when he transferred from Barcelona. The 30-year-old Brazilian international has a contract in Paris until 30 June 2025 and it is very likely that he will keep this agreement. But his fans are asking – what happens after that?
Neymar has been at PSG since August 2017, when he transferred from Barcelona. The 30-year-old Brazilian international has a contract in Paris until 30 June 2025 and it is very likely that he will keep this agreement. But his fans are asking – what happens after that?
Will Neymar end his career at PSG or another European club? Will he return to his native Brazil before hanging up his cleats? The Parisian star then hinted at where his next steps could be in the Phenomenos podcast.
“I don’t know, I have some doubts about returning to Brazil. I don’t know if I will be able to play there again. Actually I would like to play in the US, I would like to spend at least one season there,” Neymar said on the Fenomenos podcast, as quoted by Goal.
Neymar also revealed that one of the things that attracts him to overseas competition is the smaller portion of matches and therefore more time off. The MLS clubs play 34 matches per season, while the German Bundesliga, for example, operates in the same format.
But he also told all the performers that he is not thinking about football retirement at the moment and plans to continue as long as his body will listen to him.
“I joke with my friends that I will retire from football when I am 32 years old. But it’s just a joke. Honestly, I’ll play until I’m physically and mentally tired. So as long as my mental health is intact, I think I’ll last a few more years,” he realises.
Finally, he added that it is his mental health that means the most to him. His contract, as we also wrote above, runs until 2025. In the same year Neymar will celebrate his thirty-fourth birthday and it is also unlikely that he will leave the European battlefield any time soon.
“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to be the national team’s top scorer. Of course, it is one of my personal goals and I hope to achieve it. I hope to break Pelé’s record, because he is the idol of everyone in Brazil,” Neymar concluded.
It should be noted, Neymar would not be the only star heading to Major League Soccer. In recent years, Nani, Chicharito and Gonzalo Higuaín, for example, have moved to overseas competition.
