Gabriel Martinelli produced a unique performance against Wolverhampton. He made two yellow card fouls in the space of about five seconds, referee Michael Oliver counted him out and he went to the showers.
Arsenal went ahead at Molineux Stadium in the 25th minute after Gabriel’s goal. But the home team were the better team, keeping more of the ball on the hoof and outshooting their opponents as well.
Nothing of substance happened in the first half and the most interesting moment came in the 69th minute.
Young Brazilian Gabriel Martinelli lost the ball at the line and the home side had a throw-in, but the 20-year-old talent thought he had been fouled and pushed the oncoming player out of frustration. The head referee allowed the advantage and Martinelli sprinted back.
But his anger wouldn’t let him go, Chiquinha ran in and interrupted the promising action with a backhanded tackle. Referee Oliver didn’t hesitate and showed Martinelli a yellow card for the first tackle, then for the second and sent him off.
Arsenal and red cards, a book could be written about it, the Gunners have seen four red cards in the last six games. Gabriel got sent off against Manchester City, Xhaka against Liverpool in the cup and Thomas Partey in the rematch. The fourth sending off was added by Martinelli.
However, Arsenal did not let it get them down and beat Wolves 1-0. It was their first competitive win in 2022, after three defeats and two draws.
