Young Greek footballer died of cardiac arrest in the stadium

Greek footballer Alexandros Lampis died at the age of just 21 after suffering a cardiac arrest in the stadium, the English daily The Sun reported. It took the ambulance more than twenty minutes to get there.

Alexandros Lampis, a Greek footballer playing in Greece for the third-league team Ilioupoli, had just played his last game in life without knowing it himself. After only five minutes of play, he collapsed on the pitch and the fight for the young footballer’s life began. Reports from his homeland say he collapsed from cardiac arrest.

Unfortunately, there was no defibrillator in the stadium, and although it was a match in the capital Athens, the ambulance journey took more than twenty minutes. Those present tried to give the young player first aid, but unfortunately to no avail.

His club announced the sad news on their social media: “Our Aleko, our friend, our brother. You left so unfairly. The whole team, the whole city mourns today. All the words are useless… Just a huge pain and a clenched stomach. Farewell, our Alecara.”

Situations like this are not unique. The shocking incident occurred just eight months after Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest, just like Lampis, during Denmark’s match at Euro 2020. But the Danish international was able to be saved by the medical team and has already signed a six-month contract with Brentford this week.

Another similar case happened to Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero. He had to leave the field in the La Liga match against Alavés in November due to a cardiac arrhythmia. Unfortunately, the star player had to retire due to heart problems.

Let us hope that we will experience as few such tragic moments as possible on football pitches.
