UFC 270 offered two title fights, with Francis Ngannou defending his heavyweight belt and Brandon Moreno defending his flyweight belt. How did the fights turn out and how did the main card of the first numbered tournament of the biggest MMA organization in the world look like this year?
The UFC’s first numbered tournament of the year offered an interesting spectacle. The main card opened with a welterweight bout between Michael Morales and Trevin Giles.
Twenty-two-year-old Morales scored a well-deserved victory in his debut in the world’s largest organization, finishing his opponent in the first round. Giles, though angry, wanted to continue the fight, and his passive defense against ground and pound despite the referee’s calls could not have ended any other way.
The fight between Said Nurmagomedov and Cody Stamann ended very quickly. Nurmagomedov wasted no time and was active right from the start of the fight, winning by choke after 47 seconds.
Michel Pereira and Andre Fialho catered the first bout that had to be decided on points. The latter was slightly better in the first round, even though he took the fight at the last minute. But in the second and third rounds Pereira landed many more significant punches, entertained the fans with his style again and deservedly won.
Although for the first time on a main card the fight did not end early, it was indeed an attractive battle. Moreover, Pereira performed his famous flip, which unfortunately missed his opponent, and in short, he provided a good show.
The first title fight of the night ended with Deiveson Figueiredo winning, much to the disapproval of the fans. Brandon Moreno lost a close battle on points, but the fight was close nonetheless, with all three judges agreeing on the winner.
Figueiredo thus regained his belt, taking Moreno down twice with his punches, tactically he handled the fight perfectly.
After the win, the Brazilian told his opponent not to give up. He is ready for a fourth fight, which could easily take place in Mexico.
A great rivalry with great sportsmanship on both sides. A man’s weight has a lot to offer!
But the heavyweight has not changed his champion. Francis Ngannou was a slight underdog, but he dealt with Ciryl Gane’s excellent movement by taking the fight to the ground. It’s worth noting that Ngannou delivered more takedowns in this fight than he has in his entire UFC career to date.
Gane was more technical in the standup, with Ngannou getting virtually no chances to send a KO punch. He surprised many an expert with his ground skills. A deserved win on points, although many might have expected a slightly more attractive fight. Ngannou’s injury probably had a lot to do with the attractiveness.
Gane suffered the first loss of his career, but his journey is still impressive!
