The UFC’s new lightweight king has had a very successful 2021 and believes he will be no less successful this year. However, Charles Oliveira admitted that he is fighting with a big handicap. How do you think he would fight without it?
Charles Oliveira has become the new lightweight king. He won the championship belt after defeating Michael Chandler, then defended it against Dustin Poirier.
He is expected to be challenged by Justin Gaethje later this year, but star Conor McGregor is also in the running. Whether or not the Brazilian retains the title, he deserves huge admiration.
He won the title despite a huge handicap. Probably every UFC fan has noticed that Oliveira has very thick glasses before and after the fight, but without them he sees worse than one would expect.
“My eyesight sucks. I’ve never made a secret of it, but I also saw no reason to address it. I can see three opponents, three faces in a match. I try to hit the middle one. To be honest, when I take my glasses off, I can barely see 50% of what I can see with them on,” the champion surprised on the Flow Podcast.
Oliveira revealed that he has a strong belief in God, part of the reason why he hasn’t shown this problem in MMA. In the cage, he says this handicap doesn’t limit him, but on the street it’s different.
“Imagine how I would be if I could see 100% during my fights,” the Brazilian offered an interesting thought.
The UFC lightweight king puts on a truly dominant performance, so it’s admirable that he does so despite his vision problems.
