Carlo Ancelotti can be very pleased with the way his charges finished 2021, with a 2-1 win at a nasty Athletic Bilbao to secure an eight-point lead at the top of the table heading into the short winter break. Real Madrid won the match with two goals from Karim Benzema, especially the first one was an exhibition.

The match had an unexpectedly sharp pace from the start. It was as if the Real Madrid players wanted to apologize to their fans for Sunday’s goalless draw with Cadiz.

At the start of the fourth minute, Vinícius pulled the ball down the left flank, and with a back pass found Kroos on the whitewash. He unselfishly crossed the ball to Benzema from the first touch and the French marksman confirmed his extravaganza this season.

He didn’t hesitate at all and although it was quite from an angle, he curled the ball beautifully without preparation to the back post. A beautiful goal.

But the White Ballet didn’t let up. Three minutes later, they were two goals up. Valverde won the ball brilliantly in the middle of the pitch and Real Madrid went on a fast break.
