A few years ago, the impossible became real. Barcelona leaves the Champions League after the group stage with a shocking 2:9 record. In the spring they will only continue in the Europa League, how does the Spanish media feel about this?

Barcelona first lost 0:3 to Bayern in the group stage, then 0:3 to Benfica. Then came two 1: 0 wins over Dynamo Kiev, which gave the Catalans some hope. However, a 0:0 draw with Benfica sent Barcelona into a position of having to beat Bayern on their field. That didn’t happen, the Munich side again beat their innocuous opponents 3: 0.

This was the first time in the history of the Champions League that Barcelona did not advance to the knockout stage. This is a huge shock not only for the Catalan club, but also for the whole of Spain. How does the local media feel about this?

“Embarrassment in Germany. No miracle was born in Munich or Lisbon and Barcelona’s new day is so Thursday. Barcelona remains stuck in time. Its nightmare began with a 2:8 defeat by Bayern and continues with a Europa League crash, again after a defeat to Bayern,” wrote the daily Marca.

“Barcelona is hopeless. It had neither a chance to attack nor a chance to achieve a miracle in Munich, where it lost again to Bayern, who looked like they didn’t even need to shift up a gear,” the AS newspaper wrote scathingly.

“Barcelona’s dramatic fall yesterday wrote a new chapter. Perhaps the last. It’s a harsh reality, but although dropping out of the Champions League is hugely painful, it was to be expected. Because it’s clear to see that this team hasn’t been competitive for a long time. Hoping for a victory in Munich was tantamount to believing in miracles,” writes Diario SPORT.

For Barcelona, this is the end of an era and they must quickly begin a new one. Because no one wants to see such a big club fall so low.
