The Inter legend criticised West Ham’s play: This is not a team that plays football! Should Fiorentina have won?

West Ham United claimed victory in the final of the Conference Europa League on Wednesday night, beating Fiorentina 2-1. However, Italian former Inter mainstay and legend Giuseppe Bergomi criticised the Hammers’ performance. According to him, West Ham is not a team that plays real football.

The long-awaited European Conference League final ended in a 2-1 victory for West Ham. But it was the Italian side who could have taken the lead late in the first half.

But Luka Jovic scored an early goal. Referee Carlos Del Cerro examined the whole moment on video and then disallowed the leading goal due to offside.

The first goal came in the second half, with West Ham taking the lead. In the 62nd minute, Saïd Benrahma opened the scoring with a penalty.

However, just five minutes later the game was level. After an assist from Nicolas Gonzalez, Giacomo Bonaventura cleared the ball into the bottom left corner of the opponent’s net. However, the Italian team had more of the play.

Fiorentina produced a total of 17 shot attempts, but only four of them went between the three posts. However, the ball possession statistics also speak clearly, 63% to 37% in Fiorentina’s favour.

Unfortunately for the Viola fans, it was of no use to them. West Ham struck once more in the 90th minute when Lucas Paquetá and Jarrod Bowen had a great interplay. The latter was at the end of the action.

West Ham thus succeeded in the European Cup after 58 years and can add the Conference League winners’ trophy to their showcase of success.

However, the English team’s display was not to the liking of former Italy mainstay and Inter legend Giuseppe Bergomi. He criticized West Ham’s performance in the Conference final and said he thought Fiorentina played better.

“This is not a team that really plays football. It scores mainly from completely dead situations, from counter-attacks. The penalty came from a free kick. They haven’t changed their style, it only takes one through ball to get the ball through,” said Bergomi after the game, whose words were also quoted by Football Italia.

“Fiorentina played better, they had more possession of the ball but didn’t have enough shots on target. West Ham are more experienced and clinical,” he added, concluding.
