Zlatan Ibrahimovic has already experienced a lot in his career. He has been through several big clubs, experienced a lot of success. He has even tried his hand at Manchester United, a team he has written about in his new autobiography.
It was 2016. In the summer, the star Zlatan Ibrahimovic ended his engagement at PSG, where he left an indelible mark. The big question was who he would sign for. Manchester United were the lucky ones.
It was a spectacular connection. After all, the Red Devils are the most successful club in England, yet since the end of Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure they have never been able to build on the successful era under his leadership. It was the arrival of the Swedish marksman that could change that.
Ibrahimovic was supposed to instil the right and winning mentality in the team. He himself had high expectations. He believed that this was a great club destined for great things to come. It just more or less didn’t happen.
Manchester United managed to win three trophies during Ibrahimovic’s time there. He won the Europa League once, the League Cup and the Community Shield.
The famous striker appeared in 53 competitive games during his time at Old Trafford and finished with a record of 29 goals and 10 assists. Excellent stats for the toughest league in the world at his age. Unfortunately, an injury put an end to everything, after which Ibrahimovic went to the USA to stretch his legs.
And how does he actually remember his time at Manchester United?
“Everybody thinks Manchester United is a top big club, one of the richest and most powerful in the world. From the outside looking in, that’s what it looked like to me. But once I was there, I realised that the mentality at the club was completely the opposite,” Ibrahimovic elaborates in his new autobiography, Adrenaline.
The now 40-year-old striker continues to shine at AC Milan, while Manchester United continue to flounder. His words were in a way confirmed by the Red Devils’ new coach Ralf Rangnick, who among other things criticised the lack of continuity, the clinging to the club’s DNA and the transfer strategy.
