Denmark, the winning team of qualifying group F for the World Cup in Qatar, is going to continue to fight against human rights violations against workers and others involved in the organisation of the tournament.
Denmark also draws attention to the laws generally in force in the host country, which it considers discriminatory.
The Danes have been drawing attention to the issue of human rights violations in Qatar for several months, for example in March they turned up at a team photo shoot before the referee’s whistle wearing jerseys with the slogan “Football supports change”.
“The DBU (Danish Football Union, editor’s note) has been extremely critical of the World Cup in Qatar, but now we will intensify our efforts and critical dialogue so that we can take advantage of the fact that by participating in the tournament we can try to bring about even more change in the country,” said its head Jacob Jensen in an interview transcribed by iRozhlas.cz.
It remains to be seen whether other national teams will join Denmark’s planned move, or if it will remain with the Nordic country.
