Germany’s biggest football club Bayern Munich has five unvaccinated players. The coronavirus situation in Germany is worsening and Bayern is trying to negotiate and has met with the players to discuss their future.
Bayern Munich are top of the Bundesliga with a one-point lead over second-placed Borussia Dortmund. The board fears that unvaccinated players could endanger the rest of the team and has sought to intervene.
On Thursday, November 18, Bayern officials met with the five players who are not vaccinated. They are Jamal Musiala, Michael Cuisance, Erik Maxim Choupo Motinga, Serge Gnabry and Joshua Kimmich.
They met during Thursday morning to discuss the worsening situation in Germany caused by COVID-19.
The Bayern bosses stressed that it is of course the right of each player to decide whether or not they want to be vaccinated. But on the other hand, it is the right of the employer to withhold the players’ salary in case of quarantine.
Cuisance was not in quarantine. The other four players were and Bayern Munich refused to pay them. Joshua Kimmich, for example, lost €768,000 for the time he was in quarantine. The rest of the team agreed with the board’s decision.
Other players who get quarantined will end up the same way as Kimmich, Gnabry, Musiala and Choupo Moting. Other measures are under discussion, such as unvaccinated players training in isolation from their vaccinated teammates.
