Wales finished second in the Czech group thanks to a 1-1 draw with Belgium in their last World Cup qualifying match. They will go into the barrage as the top seed, which pleases coach Robert Page.
Both goals were scored in the first half. Keifer Moore responded to Kevin de Bruyne’s goal and, as no more goals were scored, Wales jumped into the seeding with 15 points.
“I thought our play was excellent in certain passages and the point is well deserved. We will respect every opponent in the barrage, but we are not afraid of anyone. When we are driven by a full stadium of fans, we have no fear,” said coach Page after the match.
The Islanders lifted their spirits on Saturday when they crushed Belarus 5-1. Again at home, where they are twice as strong as on the road.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the team for putting in such a performance after Saturday’s 5:1 win over Belarus. The players were excellent.”
The coach appreciated his charges’ fighting spirit, which adorned them until the final whistle. The fans had a big part in this, even the coach of the guests praised the good atmosphere.
The draw with the best national team according to FIFA rankings is even more valuable from the point of view that the injured Gareth Bale was not available.
“We always miss him. Not only by the quality he shows on the pitch, but also by his role in the cabin. We wanted him to be here with us, he’s a proper captain,” Page concluded.
