At half-time of Liverpool’s match with Atlético Madrid, coach Jürgen Klopp made a move that many people found quite unexpected. He didn’t send Sadio Mané into the second half, so the game was over for him after 45 minutes. Jürgen Klopp had a lot of explaining to do after the game.

For Liverpool, the match with Atlético Madrid was going great in the first half. The English club took a 2:0 lead quite quickly and the visitors from Madrid received a red card in the 36th minute. This decided the match for good.

Jürgen Klopp decided not to take any further risks at half-time and took his mainstay and second goal scorer Sadio Mané off the pitch. And after the game he explained the reasons for the substitution.

“Obviously a lot of people in the stadium expected it and I think I did the right thing,” the Liverpool coach said.

Klopp also adds that the decision was not easy for him. “It was harder than you can imagine. Sadio played very well and with absolute clarity,” Klopp praised his charges.

So why did Klopp pull Mané? It was because of his health. “When the ball went into a header, one player always went down. We all saw what the Madrid players were doing. In every situation. and it was always the same players,” Klopp said of the situation.

Klopp did the right thing in the end. Atlético couldn’t do anything about the match, and Liverpool went on to an important 2-0 victory.
