Champions League or nothing? Cristiano Ronaldo could leave Manchester United if unsuccessful
In the summer, he came in as the saviour who would shoot Manchester United to the league title again. But while Cristiano Ronaldo is scoring goals, it’s not enough yet. As a result, there have been reports in the media that if the Red Devils don’t make it through to the Champions League, the Portuguese could move away from Old Trafford again.
The fairytale story is far from a similar ending so far. Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United after 12 years was a big transfer bombshell, it’s just that so far it’s been a bit of a squeaker.
It can’t be said to be from Ronaldo though. 12 games, 9 goals, 1 assist. The Portuguese sniper is doing what he can to keep his team in contention for the title and shoot his way out of the Champions League group. But the performances of his teammates and especially the defence are well behind expectations so far.
Coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has virtually no concept, relying only on the individual quality of his players on the pitch, and it’s not working.
Dull performances have relegated one of England’s biggest clubs to sixth in the table, nine points behind leaders Chelsea. And if Ronaldo hadn’t struck three times in the Champions League in the final minutes, Solskjaer’s side would be in last place in the group.
And the Red Devils fans are fed up. No wonder they expected that with the signings of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, this is finally their year. But this season so far has been one big crisis.
And reportedly even the players themselves are fed up. Cristiano Ronaldo is historically the most successful scorer in the Champions League, often renamed the Cristiano Ronaldo League by fans. And just the thought of Manchester United not finishing in the top four and making it into this competition scares the Portuguese goalscorer.
English newspaper Express has come up with the information that if Manchester United does not qualify for the next season of the Champions League, Ronaldo could ask to leave in the summer. Even at 36, his desire for trophies is endless and he certainly doesn’t want to settle for just the Europa League.
So United are also playing for the future of their star teammate. If they can’t keep their place in the Top 4, quite possibly Cristiano Ronaldo will move one house away.
