The summer transfer period was very wild. It offered a number of very interesting transfers and among them Griezmann’s return to Atlético Madrid. It was supposed to be a revival of his career, instead the opposite is happening.
Whoever expected that immediately after his return he would follow up the performances that graced him before his transfer to Barcelona was sorely mistaken.
Antoine Griezmann is goalless so far even at Atlético Madrid and on top of that, he is one of the lowest rated players in the team. Yet he has already played eight games this season, three of them still in the jersey of the Catalan big club.
Atlético certainly expected more from his arrival, as he has struggled to score goals. In La Liga, they have only managed to score nine times in seven games. In the Champions League, they didn’t even score in their opening game.
Three years ago, Griezmann was a huge star. After the World Cup, where he led France to the title, his value was estimated at 150 million euros. He even finished third in the Ballon d’Or poll in 2016 and 2018.
“I have no worries that Griezmann will not fulfil what we expect from him, ” still believes in the French striker Diego Simeone, who had to face uncomfortable questions from journalists about his player at the last post-match press conference.
Against Deportivo Alavés, the Madrid side had the ball on their feet 71% of the time and sent 13 shots at goalkeeper Pacheco’s goal, but none of them were accurate.
The next few games will show if the French striker can come close to the performance that graced him before his failed Barcelona engagement.
However, the next matches will not be easy for him as he will face defenders from AC Milan, Barcelona and Liverpool.
