Pedri has been playing with fire a little too much. After a huge amount of games, the inevitable injury
It was clear that it had to come sooner or later. Although nobody wished Pedri an injury, it was inevitable. The youngster from Barcelona played over 70 games and without a break he immediately joined the training. Now he has paid the price.
It was clear that it had to come sooner or later. Although nobody wished Pedri an injury, it was inevitable. The youngster from Barcelona played over 70 games and without a break he immediately joined the training. Now he has paid the price.
On the one hand, Pedri’s incredible dedication and love for football was praised. he played 52 competitive games for Barcelona, then went with the Spanish national team to the EURO. There he played 90, 90, 90, 120, 120 and 120 minutes. Incredible numbers.
Almost all the players went on holiday after a tough season ending with the Euros, but not Pedri. The Canary Islands native joined the team for the Olympics, where he saw more insane minutes. 90, 90, 73, 101, 83 and 120 minutes. After this absolutely insane summer, you’d expect the youngster to at least get some rest.
But no. Pedri flew straight from Japan to the Blaugranas training centre to join his team. Although the experts urged Barcelona’s medical team to give the youngster at least some rest, it was no use, Pedri started the new season with almost no days off.
He played the full 90 minutes against Real Sociedad in the first round and contributed to the 4-2 win. In the second round against Athletic Bilbao, he played 61 minutes in a 1-1 draw.
After that he didn’t go to the national team meeting, but finally got a few days off. However, he shortened his leave by 2 days to join Barcelona’s training process.
He played the full 90 minutes against Bayern, but did not prevent the 0:3 defeat. He also injured the quadriceps muscle in his left thigh. The length of his absence is not yet known, only his recovery will determine that.
What was hanging in the balance, although nobody wished it for Pedri, actually happened. The human body is not a machine and cannot function without rest. Next year, Pedri will probably take a longer vacation.
