Slavia? A team for the Champions League, writes in Germany. Still, Union could get a point

Slavia had a clear goal before this season. To break through to the Champions League, they adapted the width of the squad to that. But in the end it didn’t work out, the Susians are only playing in the Conference League. In Germany, however, they can appreciate the quality of Slavia.

Before the draw of the newly formed Conference League, the fans of the Susians did not know what to expect. Real football midgets were in the game, but in the end the lot was kind to Slavia. At least in terms of attractiveness.

On Thursday, the Bundesliga side Union Berlin came to Eden, while Feyenoord from the Netherlands and Maccabi Haifa from Israel will also be there.

And the first meeting with the German opponents brought Slavia a 3:1 win. The red and white team was sent into the lead by Bah, while the visiting Jaeckel was also shown a red card in the 40th minute. Nevertheless, Union managed to come back into the match and equalise at 1:1. In the last 10 minutes, Slavia created pressure which culminated in goals from Kuchta and Schranz.

According to the German daily Der Spiegel, it was an extremely difficult task to win in Eden. “Slavia had not lost at home in the league for almost three years,” the newspaper pointed out of the impressive record of the Susians.

“Due to their participation in three competitions, they are experiencing a rotation in their line-up. However, Jindřich Trpišovský’s team was built for the Champions League,” the Berliner Zeitung again praised the strength of Slavia.

There has indeed been a rotation, just look at who Jindřich Trpišovský has had on the bench. Jan Bořil, Nicolae Stanciu, Ivan Schranz, Jan Kuchta, Michael Krmenčík, Peter Olayinka… That’s really a formidable force.

In the end, Trpišovský’s substitutions worked out too. Jan Kuchta knocked in a shot from Nicolae Stanciu, Ivan Schranz scored after a pass from Michael Krmencik.

“Too bad. Maybe a point could have been scored. Urs Fischer made some big changes, but the opponent also managed to improve 1:1. The victory of the Prague team is not undeserved, but how it came about is very unfortunate for the Union,” said Bz-Berlin.de.
