Bayer Leverkusen kick off the new Bundesliga season at Union Berlin. Patrik Schick started the match in the starting line-up, but was unable to follow up his successful Euro campaign.
The opening match between Union Berlin and Bayer Leverkusen promised to be an attractive spectacle. Indeed, two quick goals were scored. The first was scored by Awoniyi in the seventh minute to put the home side in front, with Diaby equalising five minutes later.
But the rest of the match did not offer any more goals, although there were still some chances on both sides. As expected, Leverkusen were clearly more dominant, but it didn’t lead to three points.
For both teams, this is more or less a good point, neither team lost unexpectedly and will not have much to blame themselves.
However, the question is how Patrik Schick, who started in Leverkusen’s starting line-up, will perceive the match. He played almost the whole game, only being replaced by Pohjanpalo in the 89th minute.
Bayer fans are certainly hoping that the Czech striker will finally make his mark at club level and follow up a very successful European Championship. However, it didn’t happen on Union soil, on the contrary.
Schick got five good chances, but failed in all of them. But apart from that, he wasn’t very involved in the game. He scored only 13 successful passes, did not win a single foul, won at least two personal duels.
He received a not very flattering 6.28 rating from WhoScored, no Leverkusen player has received a worse rating, not counting the substitutes. Only two players in the Union jersey have earned a worse mark.
However, this is the start of the season and Leverkusen are far from full strength. However, Schick is expected to drag his offensive line all the more. In the first game, he failed to do so. Will it be better next time?
