Rapid Vienna entered the new league season on Saturday, just like Sparta. And unexpectedly lost 0:2 at home to Hartberg. The coach didn’t spare the mainstays, the line-up was almost identical to the one against Sparta on Thursday.
Lokomotiv Plovdiv, Slovácko’s opponent from the second round of the European Conference League, also opened the new season. The favoured opponent, Ludogorets Razgrad, was defeated 1:3, which could shake last year’s runner-up before the rematch.
Coincidentally, Dinamo Brest also played last year’s champion (BATE Borisov). But unlike Lokomotiv, Plzeň’s opponent won, even with a clean sheet. The 2: 0 result moved Brest into sixth place.
Let’s take a brief look at the likely opponents for the next preliminary round. Copenhagen, who may face Slovácko, played goalless against Silkeborg.
Jablonec will play the worse of Midtjylland vs. Celtic (the first match ended 1-1) in the third preliminary round of the Europa League. The Danish vice-champion won against Aalborg 1:0, Celtic lost to West Ham in a friendly 2:6.
Sparta will face Monaco if they advance over Rapid. The team from the princely city won 2-1 against Wolfsburg. If the rematch does not prevail, they will play the third preliminary round of the Europa League against Anorthosis Famagusta. The Cypriot club won against Doxa as part of their preparations.
Ferencváros (Slavia’s likely opponent for the third Champions League preliminary round) and The New Saints (Plzeň’s opponent if they qualify) did not play any matches over the weekend.
