Analysis: the Czechs are also advancing from third place, but they must fight!
EURO 2020 starts today. That is why I decided to write a short analysis about the Czech national team. Jaroslav Šilhavy’s fighters will not be a walk in the park. On the contrary. What factors will play in our favour?
EURO 2020 starts today. That is why I decided to write a short analysis about the Czech national team. Jaroslav Šilhavy’s fighters are not going to have a walk in the park. On the contrary. What factors will play in our favour? What should we watch out for? Find out in the following article.
To begin with, it will be a very spicy match with Scotland. Our traditional opponent of the new millennium will be looking to turn the tables on us right from the start. There are several reasons for this. Just look to the not so distant past.
The Kamara affair and Rangers’ criminal match with Slavia Prague have not even cooled down yet. The filmed fall of striker Rezek and the decisive penalty. Or the losses of the “Tartan Army” in the qualifiers in the days of Nedved, Rosicky, Koller, Čech or Baros.
It is really very difficult to guess here. It’s 50/50. I wouldn’t be surprised by a draw or a low number of goals. Lots of Scots play in the Premier League or are drawn from the Scottish top flight.
The wild backdrop of Celtic FC’s fantastic stadium is another undeniable advantage for our opponents. And as schoolmaster Willy says, the Scots are natural enemies to the English, Welsh, Japanese and… other Scots.
The same venue will host our match against Croatia. The Croatians have a core of players from the 2018 World Cup, where a strong selection walked all the way to silver medals. Moreover, the Croatians remember our last clash with them when we salvaged a precious last-minute draw. There are warm relations between Croatia and the Czech Republic, but this match is not favourable for us.
The only advantage I see for our colours is that if Croatia had lost in the first game against England, the weight of the moment could have fallen on them, we could have attacked from the break for example.
As it is often written, the best for last. England is hungry for a gold medal. The young generation around Kane, Foden or Mount is playing until the last moments. In short, made in the Premier League.
I don’t think England will underestimate us, if only because we managed to turn the game around with a great goal by the spiky striker Zdeněk Ondrášek. I estimate that we will get a maximum of three points in the group, maybe even less.
To be a bit optimistic, we have a very strong team that plays purposeful football. A lot will depend on the players of Slavia and the individual performances of Soucek, Jankt, Darida, Schick, Hložek or Vaclik. What about the others? England and France have a great chance for the final.
And how do you see it? Which team do you prefer? Will you be inspired by the bookmakers or will you rely on your own intuition? Let us know in the discussion.
