De Bruyne, Saka or Kane: Which players are among the top five in the Premier League this season?
The 2022/23 season was certainly not a dull one, thanks to Arsenal, who had to bow down to the Manchester City machine. However, both teams put in great performances throughout the season and it’s no surprise that apart from one place, it’s players from the top two Premier League teams that make up the Top 5.
The 2022/23 season was certainly not a dull one, thanks to Arsenal, who had to bow down to the Manchester City machine. However, both teams put in great performances throughout the season and it’s no surprise that apart from one place, it’s players from the top two Premier League teams that make up the Top 5.
5. Harry Kane
The English striker once again scored as many goals as he could, but this time it wasn’t enough to make the Top 5. There has been no better cannonballer in the Premier League this season than Kane apart from Erling Haaland, while the Albion captain was the third highest rated player this season according to WhoScored.
Kane will be 30 years old at the end of July and while there is talk of his departure every year, this time he is really being counted on.
4. Martin Ødegaard
This season, the Norwegian legionnaires have done well. While Haaland scored a record number of goals, Ødegaard certainly didn’t lag behind from his position. 15 goals and 7 assists are great numbers.
But the Arsenal captain showed much more of his skills. He controlled the game in the middle of the pitch and was unstoppable with the ball at his feet. The €35 million invested by the Gunners in the summer of 2021 to Real Madrid for this now 24-year-old midfielder has now paid for itself several times over.
After all, the team around Mikel Arteta can confirm this next year, even in the Champions League.
3. Bukayo Saka
Already at 21, the Gunners offspring is a real leader of the team. 13 goals and 11 assists clearly prove it. In addition, he has asserted himself against top teams such as the two Manchester clubs that currently surround Arsenal in the table.
Saka can only be expected to get better. If his health holds firm, we will see big things from this London native in the years to come.
2. Erling Haaland
A goalscoring machine the Premier League has never seen before. Haaland lived up to expectations and set a league record in his first season, scoring 36 goals so far and adding 8 assists.
In football, it is the strikers who are most valued, which is logical, goals are rare in football compared to other sports. And while the Norwegian cannonballer can thank all his teammates, especially Kevin De Bruyne, his 36 goals is an incredible feat for the Premier League.
1. Kevin De Bruyne
Why the Belgian midfielder? Haaland may have scored one goal after another, but as Pep Guardiola rightly said, he could do nothing without his team. That was his assessment of the Norwegian striker when asked who was the better of the Haaland – Messi pairing.
And it was De Bruyne who served amazing passes not only to Haaland but to his other teammates as well. In total, he got to 7 goals scored and 18 assists.
Moreover, he was the man who was able to take responsibility at key moments of the season. For example, in the double-header against Arsenal, he scored 3 goals and 2 assists.
But whether Haaland or De Bruyne is only a matter of who you have more sympathy for, as this duo, in short, absolutely dominated the 2022/23 edition, and one without the other would be half as good as the other players and squad members.
Guardiola has managed to suppress everyone’s egos, even if he struggled with some individuals at first, especially when it comes to Phil Foden, who after a good start, stopped getting much space on the pitch until practically March.
Thus, the Gunners’ great run will end up forgotten in favour of Manchester City, who claimed their third league title in a row, matching their city rival in that respect.
