Lionel Messi has moved ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo to the top spot in the historical ranking of top scorers in the top five European leagues. In fact, the Argentine international scored the 496th goal of his club career in the match against Strasbourg on Saturday night.
The 35-year-old striker also helped PSG to win the league title when the Parisian side drew 1-1 at Strasbourg.
Messi scored his goal in the 59th minute when a great pass from Kylian Mbappé found him in the whitewash. The famous Argentine sent the ball into the right side of the net and sent his team into the lead.
Twenty minutes later, however, it was the home side who scored. Kevin Gameiro scored in the penalty area to equalise at 1-1. PSG held on to this result until the end of the match, but it was enough to win the title.
Although Racing Lens clearly defeated AC Ajaccio 3:0 at home, the Parisians have a four-point lead over Lens at the top of Ligue 1 with 85 points in the number two position.
Messi has thus split his goal tally in his club career between two clubs. In a Barcelona jersey he scored 474 goals in 520 games, while Saturday’s strike in Strasbourg was his 22nd goal in 57 games in PSG colours.
Notably, Messi shared the top spot with Ronaldo before this match. However, he is no longer active in any of the top five European leagues (Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1 – ed.).
Earlier this year, the Portuguese playing legend moved to the Saudi Arabian team Al-Nassr. Over the last twenty years, however, Ronaldo has scored 103 goals in the Premier League for Manchester United, 311 in La Liga for Real Madrid and 81 in Serie A for Juventus.
Since his arrival at Al Nassr, Ronaldo has scored 14 goals in 16 matches in the Saudi Pro League. However, this was not enough for his team to win the league title. Al-Ittihad became Saudi Arabia’s champions for the first time since 2009 on Saturday.
