A return to the ’90s? UFC boss Dana White reacts to the clueless performance of a fighter from a famous family
The UFC has another numbered tournament under its belt, and in addition to the good performances, there is one in particular that was definitely not good. Fans and fighters alike have spared no criticism, and now the head of the organization, Dana White, has spoken out. It can’t be said that Kron Gracie pleased him.
The UFC has another numbered tournament under its belt, and in addition to the good performances, there is one in particular that was definitely not good. Fans and fighters alike have spared no criticism, and now the head of the organization, Dana White, has spoken out. It can’t be said that Kron Gracie pleased him.
Gracie’s name is a big deal in combat sports. Mostly because of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, but several fighters have left a legacy in MMA as well. Royce Gracie in particular became a legend within the UFC when he dominated his very first tournament.
In 2019, another member of this family has made his way to the UFC. In February of that year, Kron Gracie choked out Alex Caseres in two minutes and six seconds. In October 2019, however, he notched his first loss in MMA when he was defeated on points by Cub Swanson.
Gracie showed in his first MMA loss that he’s got a hell of a hard head and that he can take a lot. We just didn’t see him in the cage for a long time after that, he made some changes in his life and was a big unknown to the press and fans.
Kron is not very outgoing. He guards his personal life to the max. So it was a question of what it would be like when he was back in the cage. We found out Saturday night to Sunday, though, when Charles Jourdain faced him.
Gracie was desperate in the fight. He deservedly lost on points. He again showed a hard head, but other than getting Jourdain down a couple of times with him being alone in the bottom position where he accomplished nothing, he showed nothing.
He was noticeably worse in the standup. Much has been made of the fact that in the four years Kron hasn’t fought, MMA has simply moved to a whole other level. And what Kron was doing, nobody knows, but fans joked that he certainly wasn’t training boxing.
There was also a lot of talk on social media that this was the worst performance many fans had ever seen.
And what did UFC boss Dana White have to say about that? “I like Kron, he’s a good guy, but he looked extremely limited in this fight. It was like he came from 1995. He picked a very tough way to win a fight these days,” MMA Fighting quotes him as saying.
“He’s got a big heart and a tough chin. Ilike him, I don’t want to mock his performance, but he chose a really poor tactic,” White added about the performance of the bearer of the legendary surname.
Gracie now has a record of 5-2. Whether we’ll ever see him in the UFC again, we’ll have to wait and see. But according to many experts, Kron is no longer up to that level.
