Lionel Messi and Barcelona? This was supposed to be a romantic football story that would last from beginning to end. But due to financial problems, the Argentine had to leave for Paris for two years, but now there are talks about his return to Camp Nou.
Barcelona helped Messi when he was a young boy. He had growth problems and could not afford expensive care, the Catalan club paid for it and helped him in his football development.
The Argentine footballer eventually paid it back to the club with interest as he helped it to several trophies. But in 2021, this relationship fell apart as Barcelona’s financial problems did not allow the club to sign Messi to a new contract.
The Rosario native left the Catalan capital in tears and headed to Paris. But he is not completely happy at PSG. In both seasons he has already dropped out in the Champions League eighth finals, the Ligue 1 title is only a very poor substitute.
Moreover, he had to listen to harsh criticism and even booing from his own fans, something he was not at all used to at Barcelona, where he is taken for a god.
Logically, this intensifies speculation about Messi’s departure from France. He is only under contract at PSG until the end of June and there is no indication that he wants to extend it.
thus, the 35-year-old footballer was immediately linked with a return to Barcelona, where he experienced the best moments of his career. And even though it seems unrealistic due to the Blaugranas’ ongoing financial problems, the club’s vice-president Rafa Yuste has given fans hope.
“We are in contact with Leo Messi’s team. Leo knows how much we appreciate him and I would be thrilled if he came back. Of course Messi loves Barcelona and the city, so we hope to find the right conditions for his story to continue here,” Yuste, quoted on Twitter by journalist Fabrizio Romano, was quoted as saying.
Recently, Kun Agüero, a former Manchester City and Barcelona player and one of Messi’s best friends, said that his return to Camp Nou is a 50-50 proposition.
Messi would certainly not be opposed to a return home either, but the financial side of things remains a problem. Barcelona will have to slash the financial ceiling a lot in the summer and they will already have to get rid of some players with big salaries. And to include Messi in all this may be unrealistic.
