Manchester United failed to win their first game after the national break, losing 0:2 to Newcastle. The result was still merciful, as the Magpies absolutely outplayed the favourites in a stormy atmosphere.
Newcastle started very actively and the Red Devils couldn’t catch the opponent’s pace. Nevertheless, Wout Weghorst was the first to fire in the 12th minute, but his fierce shot only strained the side netting of Nick Pope’s goal.
In the 15th minute, on the other hand, the visiting David de Gea had to intervene. First he reflexively blocked a header from striker Alexander Isak, then Joe Willock shot him from a set piece, even though he had half the goal open.
After that, the pace dropped until Diogo Dalot hit the space between the three posts in the 34th minute, but very weakly. It was Sean Longstaff who came much closer, his shot from just outside the box just missing the left post.
In the 41st minute, Willock wasted another chance, this time choosing wrong punch instead of technique. After the change of sides, the Magpies continued to chase the opening goal, with Fabian Schär taking an inaccurate shot from distance.
Otherwise it was up and down and the game was entertaining despite the goalless draw. By the 67th minute, most of the stadium was celebrating. The home side played a good team move, which ended with Willock’s header into the open net.
In the 76th minute it could have been all over, but Joelinton hit the crossbar and Schär’s shot was parried by Anthony Martial.
In the 88th minute, the Black and Whites had already scored, again a header from substitute killer Callum Wilson celebrated the success.
Newcastle thus replaced their opponents in fourth place in the table after the win, but Manchester are only a score behind.
