The worst transfer in Barcelona’s history? The Brazilian striker didn’t play a single minute for the club
Brazilian striker Keirrison came to Barcelona in 2009 as a great talent. The transfer cost almost 14 million euros and soon turned into a player’s nightmare.
Brazilian striker Keirrison came to Barcelona in 2009 as a great talent. The transfer cost almost 14 million euros and soon turned into a player’s nightmare.
The 2009 transfer window was dominated by Barcelona’s biggest competitor, Real Madrid. It brought Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Kaká and Xabi Alonso into its ranks.
However, Barcelona itself has not been left behind, strengthening its attack with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. In the same year, another striker with promise for the future – Keirrison – joined the club.
Not surprisingly, the striker caught the attention of Catalan scouts. During his time in Brazil he scored 89 goals in 158 games in all competitions.
After his transfer, Keirrison didn’t hide his great enthusiasm and said that he can’t wait for the day he will put on the Barcelona jersey. However, that never happened.
His arrival was immediately followed by a loan spell at Benfica in Portugal. Even with the huge competition in the attack, he only took part in seven matches and changed his place of work after only six months. In the next six months he played ten games for Fiorentina in Italy and scored twice.
The guest stint was supposed to be a year and a half long, but after only six months it was terminated.
The loan marathon did not end and Keirrison was returned to his home country during the next season. Specifically to Santos.
He went on to play for Cruzeiro and Coritiba. In these four years, the striker scored only twelve goals, so it’s no wonder that Barcelona didn’t see any future in him.
The club did not renew his contract and he returned to Coritiba as a free agent.
Keirrison was looking forward to his Barcelona adventure and hoped to successfully continue in the footsteps of his Brazilian predecessors. Unfortunately, in this case, that dream remained unfulfilled.
