PSG’s form in recent games? Certainly inadequate for a team featuring the star trio of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Neymar. Since the new year, the French giant is simply not doing well.
There has even been a run of three losses in a row. This was broken a week ago against Lille, when Messi decided a dramatic battle with a 4-3 goal from a direct kick in the last seconds of the match.
On Sunday, it was time to avenge the cup defeat to Marseille. Olympique went into the match thinking that they might not be without a chance at home. Moreover, it was motivated by the fact that it had recently beaten PSG. But he had no chance.
First of all, Gianluigi Donnaruma was magical in front of goal, keeping a clean sheet after several excellent saves. And up front, even without Neymar, the offensive duo of Messi and Mbappé were in charge. They scored all three goals.
The first one came in the 25th minute when Messi took the ball in the middle, ran a few yards and then sent Mbappé in for an own goal. They had rehearsed a similar situation together in the pre-match warm-up. Clearly, it paid off to the maximum.
On the second goal four minutes later, the roles were reversed. Mbappé, from the wing, sent the ball into the area where Messi and nobody else ran.
However, we waited until the 55th minute for the ultimate masterpiece, when Messi showed incredible footballing genius. We will probably never see anything like that again. But it is also worth noting how Mbappé dealt with the pass.
Mbappé’s second goal of the game gave PSG a 3-0 lead, which they have now taken. And that wasn’t all. The Frenchman scored his 200th goal for the Parisian side, equalling Edinson Cavani, with whom he temporarily shares the top spot in the historical scorers’ table.
Messi scored his 700th league goal in the match. And he could have added one more, but he hit the bar. He could have had an extra assist, but unfortunately Mbappé hesitated in at least one situation.
Both have sensational numbers this season. The Argentine has played 28 games for PSG, scoring 17 goals and adding 16 assists. The Frenchman boasts of having scored 29 goals and added 7 assists in 29 games.
