In the 2018 Champions League final, Mohamed Salah believed he would win the Eared Cup in his first season. But his dreams ended in the first half when he had to make a substitution after a clash with Sergio Ramos and the Reds eventually lost 1-3.
Salah thus announced Real Madrid’s rematch, but he is still waiting for it. He had his first opportunity in the quarter-finals in 2021, but Liverpool crashed out after losing 1: 3 and drawing 0: 0 with Real Madrid. When the Reds made it through to the final last year and Salah was asked who he wanted from the Real-Manchester City pairing, he was clear.
“Well… I want to play against Madrid. I have to be honest, it’s personal for me, I want to play against Madrid. Because we lost the final against them,” Salah replied. When Real advanced to the final the next day, he tweeted, ” We have to even the score.”
Real, however, won the final again and Salah’s revenge failed. He now had another chance in the eight-final, only for Liverpool to take a severe beating. No wonder Salah is the butt of the jokes.
“Mo Salah refuses to leave the pitch because he still has to settle the score with Real Madrid,” was the caption of a Twitter meme addressed to Salah. “This is not a rivalry… We always get our asses kicked,” read another funny picture.
The Liverpool defence had to take a lot of jokes about him. It was unusually penetrative on Tuesday night and deservedly got five goals.
Especially at the third Real goal, the Reds players stood like pillars of salt and challenged Milito to score. Benzema also danced beautifully through the home defence for the fifth goal.
But the goalkeepers had their work cut out for them. Both Courtois and Alisson made huge mistakes, which we are not used to with the best goalkeepers in the world.
After last year’s final, Klopp said he was sure Liverpool would be back. “Where is the final next year? In Istanbul? Book a hotel, ” he said confidently in May. Now his words are coming back to him like a boomerang.
Not to be outdone by the traditional classic of calling the Ambulance. It didn’t look good for Real at 2-0 to the home side, but the comeback was magical.
Liverpool have lost to Real Madrid seven times in the last eight games, once a draw. The Royal club is making a lapdog of the Reds.
