Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gündoğan is a viable option for Barcelona to strengthen the midfield in the summer. The player’s agent appeared at the Blaugranas offices on Thursday, where he met with the sporting management team consisting of Mateu Alemany, Jordi Cruyff, Jordi Masip and Franc Carbó.
The German’s contract with the Citizens expires this June and his name has come up several times in connection with a move to Camp Nou.
Back in November last year, it was highly speculated that Gündoğan’s transfer was a January option for Barcelona.
In the end, the club did not bring in any new players due to zero financial room for manoeuvre. In addition, the possible arrival of Jude Bellingham to Manchester City would mean limited time on the pitch for the 32-year-old midfielder.
In early December, even Onda Cero journalist Alfredo Martínez reported that Xavi had chosen Gündoğan as Sergio Busquets’ successor. The coach is expected to believe that the German is capable of adapting to the defensive midfield position at Barcelona.
Moreover, speculation about his possible arrival has been fuelled by Barcelona’s sporting director Mateu Alemany. “Gundogan? We met with his uncle, who is believed to be Christensen’s agent.
We just talked about his performances and how happy we are with him. Hehas adapted very well and that it was a great transfer,” he revealed.
