Longest goal, fastest shot or most cards or interesting football records
Very often footballers on the pitch will do something that fascinates you and makes you say: “I’ve never seen anything like that in my life!” But which records have you really only had the opportunity to see once in a competitive match?
Very often footballers do something on the pitch that fascinates you and makes you say, “I’ve never seen anything like it in my life!” But which records have you really only had the opportunity to see once in a competitive match?
Goal from longest distance – Asmir Begovic – 2013
The goal from the furthest distance was scored by goalkeeper Asmir Begovic. In a Stoke City jersey in 2013, he beat Artur Boruc in the Southampton goal from 89 yards.
Goal from long range by head – Jone Samuelsen – 2011
It sounds unbelievable and if you haven’t seen the video, you might not believe it. Jone Samuelsen scored a headed goal from 58 yards, halfway up the pitch from 50 yards. However, Samuelsen was very lucky when he was hit in the head by an opponent on the rebound and it bounced into an empty net as the keeper ran onto the corner.
Most yellow cards in a match – 2011
Do you know how many red cards a referee can give out to one team? You can probably guess that if a team has less than 6 players, the match must be called off. But even that didn’t stop referee Damian Rubino from sending off all the players. In 2011 in Argentina he handed out 36(!) red cards when he sent off all 22 players, all substitutes and even some members of the management team for a mass brawl on the pitch. An absolute record.
Most expensive transfer – 2017
The most expensive transfer dates back to 2017, but in today’s dynamic times it may soon be surpassed. The current record was set by PSG, who bought Neymar from Barcelona for a staggering 222 million euros.
World Records – Fastest Shot
Defenders and goalkeepers, hands and feet out of the way. The fastest shot ever recorded is by Ronny, a Sporting Lisbon defender at the time. The missiles he sent out at the time recorded a speed of 221 kilometres per hour.
World Records – Record breaking unbeaten streak
This record might also be of interest to Czech fans, specifically those of Slavia. In the autumn of 2021, Slavia completed an impressive 54-match unbeaten streak, but someone has broken the Slavic unbeaten record.
In the 1980s, Steaua Bucharest literally terrorised the Romanian top flight. Nobody could find a recipe for it for five consecutive seasons, which amounted to an incredible 104 matches. Each game lasted the classic 90 minutes, which means that Steaua didn’t lose for 6 and a half days.
World records – Most goals by a goalkeeper – Rogerio Ceni
The original job of goalkeepers is to stop goals. But there are those who are proficient in front of goal on both sides of the pitch. Sao Paulo goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni has scored a staggering 128 goals in his career. In addition to penalties, he has also scored from direct kicks.
World records – Fastest red card at the World Cup – José Batista
A record you don’t want to hold. Uruguayan José Batista scored the fastest red card in the 1986 World Cup. After just 36 seconds of play, he jumped with both feet into Scotland’s Gordon Stratchan and went into the showers.
World Records – Number of goals in a calendar year – Lionel Messi
Some of the records are beyond reason. Lionel Messi was absolutely unstoppable in 2012. He smashed Gerd Muller’s record to pieces and scored 91 goals.
World records – number of goals in the Champions League – Cristiano Ronaldo
The most famous club football competition in the world is undoubtedly the Champions League, sometimes dubbed the Cristiano Ronaldo League. The Portuguese phenomenon holds countless records in it, including the two most important ones. He has the most trophies of any player (5) and has scored the most goals – 135.
