The third round of the Premier League offered three losses to teams from the big six, with Liverpool, Chelsea and the current leader Manchester City losing points. Which moments from last weekend should not be missed?
Chelsea’s embarrassing top three
Chelsea players might have had their heads full after the London derby with Tottenham (2: 2) with two controversial goals from their opponents, but they needed to get those thoughts out of their minds before the next round. But that didn’t happen and the Blues left the Leeds stadium with a 0: 3 defeat.
The home side’s deployment was a level higher, with Brenden Aaronson and Rodrigue scoring in the first half and Jack Harrison increasing the lead after the change of sides. The team lacks a classic playmaker and the management must find someone ideal for this position before the end of the transfer period.
Newcastle shootout
Eddie Howe has put together his dream team after a change of owners in the last two transfer windows and the Magpies have been one of the best teams in the league ever since. They confirmed this against Manchester City, they took the champions of the last two league seasons as the first team.
Newcastle were quickly losing, then even leading 3-1, eventually taking the point for a six-goal shootout with all ten. At the same time, they proved that they can indeed fight with the best, and Allan Saint Maximin proved once again that when he has a day, he is the best dribbler in the league. On the other hand, the Citizens were two points adrift, plus they lost the top spot. Arsenal are now in the lead.
A revitalised Manchester United
Monday’s showpiece of the round between Manchester United and Liverpool was really worth it. The Red Devils were dominant from the start, quickly going into the lead and apart from the final ten minutes of the first half there was no passage in which Jürgen Klopp’s charges dominated significantly.
Left back Tyrell Malacia made his debut in the line-up and Lisandro Martinez was also significantly better than before. To beat the current Liverpool with the form of Manchester and moreover without Cristiano Ronaldo, hat’s off to Erik ten Hag.
