Joselu Mato is a bit of an unassuming signing for Real Madrid, but one with a story to tell. Just 11 years ago, he was begging fans on Twitter for a link to follow Real Madrid, now he has introduced himself with a beautiful scissors in the build-up against Manchester United.

The Spanish striker got his first peek at La Liga in a Celta Vigo jersey. It was Real Madrid who bought him as a youngster in 2009. However, he failed to establish himself in the Los Blancos jersey and played only two games, one in La Liga and one in the Copa del Rey.

Coincidentally, he did score in both games, and was even assisted by Cristiano Ronaldo in the league match. But then there was competition in the form of Benzema and Higuain and Joselu wouldn’t have played much.

So he left for Hoffenheim for €6 million in the summer of 2012. But he didn’t give up on Real Madrid and continued to be interested in watching him. But apparently he didn’t have his TV on in Germany yet, so he searched for a stream on the internet.

“Can anyone send me a good link to watch Real Madrid?” he asked Joselu in August 2012. After a goal against United, fans pulled the tweet and it went viral.

Joselu’s career continued for a while in the Bundesliga, scoring 17 goals in two seasons at Frankfurt and Hannover. He then went to Stoke, also played at La Coruña before being bought out by Newcastle in the summer of 2017, where he crashed out.

He did score six times in two, but he is not remembered fondly by fans. Joselu was throwing away huge chances and the performances weren’t great either. So in the summer of 2020, he returned home to Spain, where Alavés chose him.

He woke up on home soil, perhaps matured a bit and finally started scoring goals regularly. In his first two seasons in the blue and white jersey he scored 11 times, and in his third season he scored 14 goals. He spent last season at Espanyol, where he scored 16 league goals.

When the Catalan club was relegated to the second league, it was clear that Joselu would remain among the elite. And even among the greatest. In fact, Real Madrid were just looking for a replacement striker and a one-year loan spell for the 33-year-old, who is in the form of his life and is also a big Madrid player, seemed like the ideal option.

Joselu, for example, went to support Real Madrid in Paris for the Champions League final in May 2022. But not as a star in the VIP, but in the stands as an ordinary fan in a jersey.

And fans don’t forget such things, which is why when he came to Real in the summer he received a great welcome. And Joselu showed up in the best possible way. On the US tour, against Manchester United, he put in a magnificent scissor-kick in his second game.
