Barcelona announces new signing! Experienced Martinez arrives from Athletic, high exit clause included in contract

After several years in the Basque Country’s largest city, Iñigo Martínez moves to Barcelona. The Catalan big club confirmed the news today on their club website. The player will sign a two-year contract, which will include an exit clause.

FC Barcelona confirmed the arrival of defender Iñigo Martínez from Bilbao on Wednesday morning. The player’s contract at the Basque club expired at the end of June this year, after which there was no extension.

The Catalan giant has agreed terms with Martínez and will sign a two-year contract shortly, as the club’s official statement says.

The new contract will also include an exit clause set at €400 million. As for his market value, it currently stands at €10 million, according to the Transfermarkt website.

“Íñigo Martínez has agreed terms with Barcelona after his contract at Athletic Club expired. The player will sign a two-year contract valid until June 2025, which will include an exit clause set at €400 million,” reads the club’ s official statement.

In connection with his arrival, based on the words of club president Joan Laporta, Barcelona will want to get rid of another stopper Clement Lenglet.

At the same time, Martinez will become Barcelona’s second signing in this transfer window. The first one was of course Ilkay Gündogan, who moved to Camp Nou as a free agent from Manchester City.

Thirty-two-year-old Martinez transferred to Bilbao at the end of January 2018, Athletic Club sent €32 million for him at the time to Real Sociedad, where he grew up playing football.

During that time, he played 177 competitive games for the Basque club, scoring eight goals as a defender and assisting seven more.
