Football record collector Didier Deschamps extended his unique streak of going unbeaten in the Euro qualifying groups with a 1-1 draw against Poland. According to his post-match words, the new tournament will start this weekend.

The two teams’ biggest stars secured a draw between France and Poland in the last match of Group D. Robert Lewandowski also responded to Kylian Mbappé’s penalty kick in the 79th minute. The French finished second in the group behind Austria. Poland is packing its bags.

Although he was not at all happy with the draw after the match, France coach Didier Deschamps extended his unique streak. He was in fact unbeaten in his ninth consecutive match in the European Championship’s preliminary groups.

“We qualified for the knockout phase, but we wanted to finish first in the group. We had a number of chances in the first half, but Poland had an excellent goalkeeper. Skorupski made a great save,” Deschamps told uefa.com after the game.

France will face someone from a balanced Group E

Mbappé was the best man on the pitch in a blue French jersey. The fresh Real Madrid reinforcement had to come on with a face mask due to a broken nose. Ten minutes into the second half, the 25-year-old converted a penalty.

“Now we have to work on improving our game. This weekend is basically the start of a new tournament and we want to be successful. As far as Poland is concerned, they played well, just like in the previous matches. They are a good team,” Deschamps added.

France thus finished second in Group D behind victorious Austria, who surprisingly beat the Dutch 3-2 on Tuesday night. Who Deschamps’ charges will face is in the stars. We will be wiser on Wednesday evening.

France will face someone from the balanced Group E, where all teams have three points after two matches. It can then play anyone of the foursome of Romania, Belgium, Slovakia or Ukraine.
