One hundred points, no wins, a single podium and fourth place in the Constructors’ Cup. That’s Ferrari’s record after seven grand prix races this Formula One season. The only podium finish, namely third place, came from Charles Leclerc.
And that was in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the fourth race of the season. The Monegasque driver in the service of the Scuderia Ferrari team is thus understandably frustrated, with his team still unable to find the ideal set-up in terms of its technological concept.
In terms of points, Ferrari’s best race this year was at the Baku circuit, where it scored 25 points in Sunday’s race and a further eleven points in Saturday’s sprint. But the other results?
Only Carlos Sainz finished fourth in Bahrain, while both Ferrari drivers scored points in Saudi Arabia, albeit only sixth (Sainz) and seventh (Leclerc). Australia was another disaster for the Maranello team, with Leclerc failing to finish the race and Sainz finishing twelfth. Zero points scored.
In the Miami Grand Prix, Sainz scored ten points for finishing fifth, Leclerc six points for finishing in position number seven. In Monaco, Ferrari again missed a chance for solid points when the team responded to the rainy conditions with a very late pit stop.
The result? Leclerc sixth, Sainz eighth. And in Spain, only Sainz had a good race weekend.
He started the race from second place, but finished fifth. Leclerc, on the other hand, recorded another tragedy this year, setting the 19th fastest time in qualifying and then struggling in the race. The final eleventh place did not bring the Monegasque a single point.
In the drivers’ championship, the Ferrari drivers are only sixth and seventh. Sainz has scored 58 points so far, Leclerc only 42. And how are the standings in the Constructors’ Cup?
We’re doing something wrong…
“I don’t understand what we’re doing wrong, but we’re doing something wrong. In the last stint I switched back to hard tyres, I did exactly the same thing as before and the car behaved completely differently,” said a very frustrated Leclerc in his post-race interview.
“And of course we have to understand that, work on it. We really need it now, because we’ve been struggling with bad conditions or a very moody car for a few races now and today was no better,” the 25-year-old admitted.
