Rafael Nadal has just won his 14th Roland Garros, only days after the tournament he is walking on crutches. He had to undergo radiofrequency injections to help with the pain caused by a chronic foot condition called Müller-Weiss syndrome.
He played the entire tournament under the injections and couldn’t even walk after the games. Nadal was given such a strong anaesthetic that he couldn’t even feel his leg. It was the only way he could forget the pain and play to his full potential. And even then, he couldn’t find a man to beat Rafa on clay.
But the Spanish king said right after the tournament that he couldn’t go on like this. He doesn’t want to play under injections anymore, so he underwent a radiofrequency procedure immediately after returning to his country to burn the nerve and numb the painful area.
He had one session in Barcelona with his doctor Cotorro, after which he returned home on crutches. There were several fans waiting for him when he left.
If the radiofrequency works, Nadal will undergo it again. It has helped him in the past and stopped the pain for a long time, but its effectiveness is not 100%.
So the next few days will be crucial. They will decide, among other things, whether Nadal will compete at Wimbledon. He said in Paris that if his body is healthy, he will start. However, he will not play under injections as he did at the French Open.
