Benfica is having a great season. Not just the A-team. Even the reserves are doing well in the second Portuguese league. On Monday night, they scored another win and the key goal of the game was scored by their goalkeeper.
The A-team leads the league, while the reserve team is third in the second highest Portuguese competition, breathing down the neck of second-placed Farense. In short, a great year for Benfica in Portugal.
However, the B-team could be a little worse off in the table after Monday. They played at Trofense and for quite a while it didn’t look like they would get three points. However, the key moment came in the 65th minute.
Samuel Soares, Benfica B’s goalkeeper, was wondering what to do with the ball after a pass from a teammate. He looked at the opponent’s goal and with a great shot he hit the crossbar of the opponent’s goal. Unfortunately for Soares, the opponent’s goalkeeper knocked the ball into the net and it will not be credited to him.
“I saw that their goalkeeper was out of the goal. The wind was blowing towards their goal so I decided to take a risk. It worked out well. It‘s something that will stick in the minds of many,” the Daily Star quoted the 20-year-old Portuguese goalkeeper as saying.
Soares, by the way, is a goalkeeper for the Portuguese under-21 national team. It is only a matter of time before he gets the opportunity to play in the top flight and fight for a place either directly at Benfica or at another interesting club.
But let’s go back to the game. Soares scored a crucial goal to make it 1-1, only to be turned around in the 82nd minute by 19-year-old striker Luis Semedo. Benfica B therefore won the match 2-1.
It is worth mentioning that the goal scored by Soares, although not credited to him, has been making the rounds on social media. The Portuguese goalkeeper was a big draw.
