Pilsen the weakest team in Champions League history? Public reacts to Viktoria’s debacle with Bayern with criticism and humour

Viktoria Plzeň took on Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday evening. They were hoping for a miracle, but it was clear from the start that it would be in vain. The Bavarian giant started at a high tempo and the West Germans were without a chance. What is the public reaction to the result?

Bayern didn’t give Plzeň a chance

Viktoria Plzen travelled to Bavaria with a slight dose of optimism. It knew it would not have an easy task ahead of it, but it hoped that with a bit of luck it could get a good result at Bayern Munich.

Moreover, the fans were encouraged by the nineteen-man Pilsen team that managed to beat the Bavarian giant in the Youth Champions League. But when it came to the match, the home team didn’t even give the West Germans a chance to get a proper look in.

Leroy Sané scored as early as the seventh minute, Serge Gnabry increased the lead six minutes later, Sadio Mané added a third goal in the 21st minute and fifteen minutes later, thanks to semi-automated offside technology, it could have been worse, but Jamal Musiala was offside.

At half-time the score was 3-0 and Viktoria didn’t have to hope anymore. And if they did, they could only hope that the goal difference would be as small as possible. But in the 51st minute Sané scored for the second time in the match, eight minutes later Choupo-Moting increased the score to 5:0.

The game was clear-cut. And what was the worst part? That Bayern didn’t even look like they were playing at their best.

The public reaction

With Viktoria Plzen being the only Czech club in the Champions League, a lot of attention was paid to the match. As a result, all sorts of posts were circulating on social media. Some of them were quite harsh towards the West Czechs.

For example, they found support in the Spartan fan base.

Of course, there were also various jokes. Even football fans from abroad joined in.

To make matters worse, there was also the traditional Bavarian Oktoberfest, which ended on Monday.

There was also an allusion to the coefficient, which of course is not helped by the fact that the West Germans not only did not win a point in three matches, but also boasted an unflattering score of 1::12.
