Mourinho has fuelled speculation of a return to Chelsea: AS Roma? A valid contract is not everything
Chelsea is looking for a replacement after the dismissal of Graham Potter, and according to some media reports, José Mourinho could return to the London club for the second time, despite the fact that he still has a contract at AS Roma.
Chelsea are looking for a replacement after the dismissal of Graham Potter, and according to some media reports, José Mourinho could return to the London club for the second time, despite the fact that he still has a contract at AS Roma.
Mourinho first led Chelsea from 2004-2007 after his arrival from FC Porto, with whom he sensationally dominated the Champions League. He returned to the English club in 2013 and lasted until 2015. He then coached Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and now leads AS Roma.
Will the Portuguese strategist sit on the Chelsea manager’s bench for the third time in his career? It is not out of the question.
According to Goal, Mourinho is one of the hot favourites to fill the position vacated a few days ago by Potter, whose engagement with the Blues was an absolute failure.
Although Mourinho is still under contract at AS Roma for one more season, he has now fueled speculation himself by saying when asked by reporters about his future that the running contract may not be the main thing that decides the matter.
“Idon’t talk about my future with my friends or with journalists. TheRoma boss told me a few months ago that he would be happy if I stayed, but that is his view on the matter,” he told reporters, according to Goal.
“As far as my contract is concerned, I have one more year in Rome, but we all know that sometimes the contract is not the most important thing,” the Setúbal native glossed over his future.
Mourinho would probably find it hard to resist another offer from Chelsea. He has won three league titles, the FA Cup and the League Cup with the club in the past and is one of the most successful coaches in Blues history. The Premier League is reportedly still very appealing to him.
