However, there is speculation every now and then about him returning to where his coaching career began. The rumours have now been fuelled by Barcelona legend Gerard Piqué.
Manchester City are still fighting for the Premier League title, but beyond that, the Champions League or FA Cup is also in play. It can still repeat the fantastic treble, although of course nobody expects it. It’s too hard and challenging.
However, Pep Guardiola has made the Citizens arguably the best team on the planet over the years, so it’s clear that there is minimal talk about it. But so is talk of his future. He’s been in England for quite a few years now, and although he himself says he’s still at the beginning of a new era, he’s been linked with other clubs.
Most of the talk is, of course, about the club that is close to his heart. Barcelona. Xavi Hernández will leave in the summer, and the club is in big financial problems and not everyone can lead it.
The Manchester City coach is not one of the favourites to become the new coach, but there has been talk for years that he could one day return to Catalonia. How realistic is that? His former charge and club legend Gerard Piqué has spoken about it.
Will Pep Guardiola return to Barcelona?
The question is who will coach Barcelona next season. But most likely it will not be Pep Guardiola. But one day he could return to the Camp Nou. One of the reasons is that not everyone can coach the Catalan big club.
“To coach Barcelona, you have to be a specific type of coach. You have to understand the way Barcelona plays. So the options are limited and they are obvious. Theyinclude Pep Guardiola, he has left a significant mark on the club and is the best coach at the moment,” Gerard Piqué told The Times.
“Will he come back? You would have to ask him. I am in contact with him from time to time. I am sure he would like to come back and that the people of Barcelona would welcome him back,” he added.
Beyond that, however, the former great defender revealed another possible option. “Mikel Arteta would also be good. He understands Barcelona, he played here in the past,” Piqué also named the Arsenal coach among good candidates.
