Real Madrid had another Champions League match to play against Braga at the Santiago Bernabéu. Just before the game, complications arose when Kepa Arrizabalaga had to withdraw due to injury. But Andriy Lunin put in a great performance!

Andriy Lunin’s role is a bit thankless. Real Madrid are counting on him as a number two, but they don’t particularly trust him as a number one.

He’s been backing up Thibaut Courtois for three years now and has only been in goal sporadically. When the Belgian was seriously injured before the start of the season, it was the 24-year-old Ukrainian’s turn.

But Real preferred to bring in Kepa Arrizabalaga, made him number one and Lunin wandered to the bench again. He hasn’t played since the start of the season and has been virtually non-existent.

He wasn’t even supposed to start the duel with Braga, Kepa was supposed to start in goal again. But he got injured just before the start of the match, felt a muscle pain in his right leg and had to go to the hospital for a check-up.

Lunin, who didn’t even have time to warm up properly, came in at the last minute. It was expected that Real players would want to help him to get up to speed, but the opposite happened.

Already in the sixth minute Lucas Vázquez unnecessarily pulled down in the opponent’s penalty area and Braga kicked a penalty. But Lunin pulled up and caught the attempt heading for the right post!

The question is whether this tackle will help Lunin to put more pressure on Kepa in the starting line-up, or whether the Spaniard will continue to be preferred.
